USA – Containership Fire at Wilmington Port Leaves Four Injured
A generator-related fire aboard the Liberian-flagged Chiquita Voyager led to four people sustaining minor burn injuries while the vessel was berthed at the Port of Wilmington, Delaware, on Wednesday, November 26.
Emergency responders were alerted shortly after 9:00 a.m., when smoke was seen rising from the ship’s superstructure. The fire had started in the engine room and intensified quickly, prompting the crew to activate the onboard CO₂ suppression system in an initial attempt to contain the flames.
As the situation escalated, the crew evacuated the ship while the U.S. Coast Guard and local fire departments deployed personnel to the scene. All crew members were accounted for, though four individuals required transport to a hospital for treatment.
Firefighting teams brought the blaze under control within about three hours, and authorities confirmed that no environmental pollution resulted from the incident.
