USA – Explosion Sparks Fire at Chalmette Refinery; No Injuries Reported Despite Powerful Blast
An explosion at the Chalmette refinery triggered a fire Friday the 8th afternoon, shaking homes and businesses across nearby areas and sending thick black smoke into the sky. Despite the intensity of the blast, officials reported no injuries, and emergency crews were able to contain the fire within minutes.
The explosion occurred at approximately 12:50 p.m. at the Chalmette Refining facility near the intersection of Paris Road and St. Bernard Highway. Firefighters from the refinery’s emergency response unit joined forces with the St. Bernard Fire Department to combat the blaze, which originated inside one of the plant’s processing units. According to fire protection inspector Ryan Roy, crews had the situation largely under control within about 10 minutes of responding.
Local officials said efforts remained focused on preventing additional hazards. St. Bernard Parish President Louis Pomes told reporters that while one fire was still being allowed to burn in a controlled manner, nearby tanks were continuously cooled to avoid further escalation. Emergency crews stayed on site throughout the afternoon to monitor the area and maintain safety.
The blast’s impact extended far beyond the refinery grounds. Residents in Chalmette, New Orleans’ Bywater neighborhood, and across the river in Algiers reported feeling vibrations strong enough to rattle homes and workplaces.
Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the explosion. Air quality monitoring remained ongoing Friday afternoon as officials continued to assess the situation and ensure there was no broader public safety threat.
