UK – Fire at Bermondsey Recycling Centre Brought Under Control

Firefighters have extinguished a major fire at a recycling centre on Landmann Way in Bermondsey after an extensive overnight operation involving 15 fire engines and around 100 personnel.

The incident affected a large quantity of refuse and spread to the roof of a warehouse building. A van and a car were destroyed in the blaze, while one man received treatment at the scene from the London Ambulance Service.

Emergency services were first alerted to the fire at 5:32 pm. Crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and neighbouring fire stations attended, and the incident was brought under control at 11:57 pm.

Station Commander Wayne Bloomfield praised the efforts of firefighters, stating that crews worked throughout the night to fully extinguish the fire. He noted that significant smoke drifted across the surrounding area during the incident, leading authorities to advise local residents to keep doors and windows closed.

Residents were also warned about loose embers, a common occurrence during large fires. Fire officials advised anyone concerned about embers near their property to soak them with water and to contact emergency services immediately if they ignited nearby materials.

Specialist resources were deployed to support firefighting operations. Two 32-metre turntable ladders were used to tackle the fire from above, while the London Fire Brigade’s Drone Team provided aerial footage to assist incident management. A Hose Layer Unit was also mobilised to maintain water supplies by laying high-capacity hose lines over long distances.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
