INDIA – Tamil Nadu Orders Statewide Safety Audit After Tiruvallur Ammonia Leak Death Toll Reaches Nine

The death toll from the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing facility in Tiruvallur district has risen to nine after another worker succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. The victims, all women, were among dozens of workers exposed to the toxic gas leak at the unit near Periyapalayam. Sixty-nine people remain under medical care.

The incident has prompted the Tamil Nadu government to launch a sweeping review of industrial safety measures across the state. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has ordered the formation of a high-level committee to audit 6,669 hazardous industrial units, with a focus on identifying safety lapses, assessing risk-management systems, and strengthening compliance with existing regulations.

Speaking in the Assembly, Labour Minister J. Mohamed Farvas said the committee would conduct a comprehensive evaluation of industries handling hazardous substances and recommend measures to prevent similar accidents. The audit is expected to be one of the largest industrial safety assessments undertaken in Tamil Nadu in recent years.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the leak, while health officials monitor the condition of workers receiving treatment. The tragedy has renewed concerns about workplace safety standards, emergency response mechanisms, and regulatory oversight in industries dealing with hazardous chemicals.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the incident and sought a report from the Tamil Nadu government, adding further scrutiny to the state’s handling of industrial safety and worker welfare.

As investigations continue, the government’s statewide audit is expected to play a key role in determining whether broader systemic shortcomings contributed to the disaster and what reforms may be needed to prevent future industrial accidents.
