UK – Fertilizer Storage Explosion in Essex Injures Firefighters, Prompts Evacuations

A massive explosion at a fertilizer storage facility in Essex, England, injured 20 firefighters, damaged emergency vehicles, and forced nearby residents to evacuate or shelter indoors as emergency crews battled a rapidly spreading industrial fire.

The incident began at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Friday, July 24, when firefighters responded to reports of a fire involving industrial buildings and surrounding land on Southend Road between East Hanningfield and Rettendon, south of Chelmsford. More than 100 firefighters were deployed as flames quickly engulfed the site.

Explosion Escalates Emergency

Less than an hour after firefighters arrived, fertilizer stored inside one of the industrial units exploded at around 5:46 p.m., sending a large fireball into the sky. The blast was heard and felt across parts of Essex, with witnesses comparing the sound to a bomb or a sonic boom.

The explosion prompted Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to declare a major incident.

Dave Bond of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said residents across the county reported hearing and feeling the explosion. While authorities determined there was no wider threat to the public, nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution, and others were advised to remain indoors with windows closed because of heavy smoke drifting across the area.

Firefighters Hurt, Equipment Destroyed

Although no civilian injuries or fatalities were reported, 20 firefighters required medical treatment. Four sustained minor injuries, while another 16 underwent precautionary examinations, including checks for possible hearing damage caused by the blast.

The fire also destroyed three fire engines and two fire service vehicles. Several agricultural buildings and vehicles on neighboring farmland were heavily damaged as flames continued burning into Saturday.

Chief Fire Officer Rick Hylton described the blaze as rapidly developing when crews first arrived, creating challenging conditions for firefighters working to contain the fire.

Emergency Operations Continue

By Saturday morning, the emergency response had been scaled back to approximately 25 firefighters supported by specialist officers and technical advisers. Crews remained at the site throughout the day to extinguish lingering hotspots as smoke continued rising from the affected area.

The East of England Ambulance Service, including its hazardous area response team, worked alongside police and fire crews during the operation.

Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the fire or confirmed the type of fertilizer stored inside the building. Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
