CZECHIA – Explosion at Czech Chemical Plant Leaves Three Workers Injured

An explosion at a chemical facility in Pardubice, Czechia, left three contract workers injured on 15 August. The blast occurred at approximately 14:09 local time at a site run by Synthesia, a producer of specialty chemicals. Two of the injured remain in critical condition.

In an official statement, Synthesia explained that the incident was caused by an “operational accident” during maintenance activities. The company noted that the situation was quickly brought under control and confirmed that neither the plant’s infrastructure nor its technology sustained major damage.

The firm also assured the public that no hazardous substances had leaked and that there was no threat to surrounding communities. All three contractors were transported to a hospital in Pardubice, located around 90 km (56 miles) east of Prague.

Authorities, including the Czech Police, have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. Synthesia reported that the immediate area is being continuously monitored.

According to company information, Synthesia operates on a 4.4 km² site and employs about 1,300 people. Its operations span three key sectors: advanced organic intermediates, cellulose derivatives, and pigments and dyes. Its clients include businesses in coatings, printing inks, textiles, paper, leather, pharmaceuticals, explosives, cosmetics, and agrochemicals.
