Fire Breaks Out at Erbil Oil Refinery, Investigation Underway
A fire broke out on Sunday at an oil refinery in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, according to a local source.
The blaze started in a storage tank at a refinery situated along the Erbil-Gwer road, Civil defense teams were promptly deployed to the site and were actively working to control the fire. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are yet to evaluate the extent of the damages.
This incident is reminiscent of a similar fire at the Erbil-Gwer refinery in June 2024. That event, which impacted an asphalt storage area, took more than 12 hours and the efforts of 35 civil defense teams to extinguish. While no lives were lost, 14 people, including firefighters, were injured, and material damages were estimated to surpass $5 million.
