GERMANY – Massive Blaze Disrupts Hamburg Port, Dozens Evacuated
A major fire tore through a warehouse at the Port of Hamburg on Monday, forcing the evacuation of about 25 people and injuring three. Hundreds of firefighters rushed to the scene as emergency crews battled to contain the flames.
Authorities reported that the fire originated from a vehicle parked inside the warehouse in the Veddel district. Explosions followed soon after, believed to have been caused by gas cylinders filled with nitrous oxide, which scattered debris across the area.
Thick black smoke rose above northern Germany’s largest port, while the sound of smaller blasts echoed across the city. Police deployed water cannons in an effort to suppress the flames.
Fire service spokesperson Lorenz Hartmann confirmed that the injured individuals were taken to safety along with dozens of others. “We managed to guide many people out of danger,” he said.
By late evening, officials could not confirm how long firefighting operations would continue. The incident also forced the closure of the nearby A1 motorway between Norderelbe and Moorfleet due to falling debris, creating traffic jams stretching up to 12 kilometers.
The Port of Hamburg, Germany’s most important international trade hub, remains a critical part of the nation’s infrastructure and economy.
