GHANA – NRSA Calls for Stronger Safety Measures After Fatal Tanker Explosion

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has called on oil marketing companies and bulk petroleum transporters to strengthen safety standards following a fatal tanker explosion near Nsawam.

According to the Authority, the incident occurred around 0430 hours on Friday, 14 February 2026, at Ntoaso on the Accra–Suhum Dual Carriageway near Nsawam. Preliminary findings indicate that a fuel tanker transporting petrol from Tema to Kumasi lost control while in motion.

Reports suggest that the tanker’s storage compartment separated from the tractor head, fell by the roadside and later exploded. The resulting fire spread to several vehicles and motorcycles that were travelling behind the tanker.

In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency, the NRSA emphasised that the transportation of petroleum products and other highly flammable materials involves significant risks and therefore requires strict adherence to safety standards and regulations. The Authority stressed the importance of strengthening emergency preparedness and response systems to minimise the impact of such incidents.

The NRSA also urged operators within the petroleum transport sector to adopt stronger safety protocols. These include regular vehicle inspection and maintenance, improved loading and coupling procedures, enhanced driver training, effective fatigue management systems, and higher competency standards for drivers. The Authority further called for strict compliance with regulations governing the transport of hazardous goods.

The Authority commended the Ghana National Fire Service teams from Suhum and Nsawam for their swift intervention in containing and extinguishing the fire, which helped prevent further loss of life and damage to property.
