HUNGARY – Massive Blaze Contained at MOL Danube Refinery, No Injuries Reported

A fire and explosion broke out late Monday evening at one of the raw material processing units of MOL’s Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta, Pest County, near Budapest, according to the National Directorate General for Disaster Management. Firefighters from the refinery were first on the scene, joined shortly after by professional crews from nearby municipalities. The blaze was brought under control by early Tuesday morning, and no injuries were reported.

The incident occurred at the refinery’s AV3 plant, MOL confirmed in a statement. Alongside the refinery’s own emergency teams, professional firefighters from Érd, Törökbálint, Szigetszentmiklós, and Budapest arrived under the highest alert classification. Mobile disaster response units from Pest and Komárom-Esztergom counties were also dispatched, equipped with chemical and foam extinguishing systems.

In total, seventeen firefighting units, supported by the refinery’s internal forces, took part in the operation. They used both water cannons and foam to suppress the flames, continuing their work throughout Tuesday morning to fully extinguish the fire.

MOL later confirmed that no one was injured in the incident and that an investigation has begun to determine its cause. Witnesses reported that flames could be seen from several kilometers away, and thick smoke rose over the refinery complex.
