IRAN – Deadly Fire Erupts at Iran’s Largest Oil Refinery in the Southwest
A fire broke out on Saturday at Iran’s largest and oldest oil refinery, located in the southwestern city of Abadan, leaving one worker dead and others injured, state media reported on Sunday.
According to the state-owned IRAN newspaper, the blaze started due to a leaking pump in a unit that was undergoing repairs. Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control within two hours, and refinery operations were not disrupted.
Iran’s deputy parliament speaker, Ali Nikzad, confirmed that several workers were injured in the incident, local outlets reported.
The Abadan refinery, which began operations in 1912, sits about 670 kilometers (approximately 416 miles) from Tehran. It is Iran’s largest refinery, supplying nearly 25% of the country’s fuel and processing more than 5.2 million barrels of oil daily.
The accident comes amid a spate of fires across Iran in recent days, with authorities blaming gas leaks and electrical faults for blazes at various residential and commercial buildings.
Despite international sanctions that restrict its oil exports, Iran remains one of the world’s major oil producers.
