Subject:                 Fire Damages Gas Turbine Inlet House as Welding Sparks Ignite e Filters

Date of Email reporting Incident:   03/02/2001

Report Detail:

Incident Description: Fire occurred at a GE Gas turbine site, which severely damages the inlet house.
Nature of Injury and Part of Body: None
Conditions – Time of Day, Weather, Lighting: Not known Causal Factors:

The fire is believed to been caused by someone welding in the inlet after the filers were installed.  While I do not believe that there is any EHS regulation that specifically prohibits this practice, this work should fall under the hot work procedure. Hot work in and around filter elements is a potentially dangerous situation as the filter elements are highly combustible. Corrective Actions:
Please make sure all welding is completed prior to installation of the filters.  If welding after the filters are installed is necessary take proper steps to ensure that filter elements will not come in contact with welding sparks. Appropriate hot work protocol should be followed.
