Incident Report

Subject:                Event - Failed standpipe

Date of Email reporting Incident:   Wed 22/01/2003 08:24

Report Detail:

During Fire Service training a replacement standpipe suffered structural failures which resulted in parts of it being thrown into the air under water pressure. No personal injuries were sustained.

Photos of failed standpipe attached. The red plastic bung,( new ones having replaced the old aluminium ones due to an earlier incident),appears to have failed when the water was turned on. The water pressure was about 4 to 5
bar. This appears to have set up a reaction force, ( in accordance with
Newtons 3rd Law), which, on initial investigation, has caused the end piece of the standpipe to break. This force is evident as the pipe is bent at this end and caused the standpipe to rise some 10 feet into the air

Although there were a number of firemen nearby, no one was injured.
