The U.S. PIRG Education Fund is the research and public education center
for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), the national advocacy
office of the state PIRGs. The states PIRGs are a nationwide network
of nonprofit, nonpartisan, state-based public interest advocacy organizations.
The state PIRGs’ mission is to deliver persistent, result-oriented activism

including environmental organizations,labor unions, labor-environment
coalitions, individuals, community groups and environmental justice
groups and networks to challenge the American Chemistry Council’s June
2004 "2nd Annual Chemical Security Summit" in Philadelphia,
USA.
GAO - Federal Action Needed to Address Security Challenges at Chemical
Facilities
As the events of September 11, 2001, showed, terrorists can cause enormous
damage to our country by attacking infrastructure essential to our economy
and jeopardizing public health and safety. Following these events, the
President, in the National Strategy for Homeland Security, identified
the chemical industry as one of 13 sectors critical to the nation’s
infrastructure. Across the nation, thousands of industrial facilities
manufacture, use, or store hazardous chemicals in quantities that could
potentially put large numbers of Americans at risk of injury or death
in the event of a chemical release. |
