Two men working on a cooling fan have died following an incident at an industrial pit in Hereford

They were working at a factory in the College Road area of the city when it is thought they were overcome by fumes after falling into the pit. Fire crews were called to the scene at Bodycote Limited, at about 1300 BST on Monday June 15th 2004, and recovered the two men unconscious. They were taken to hospital but later died. The factory was evacuated. It is believed the pit into which they fell may have become flooded with argon gas.

West Mercia Police said the two men, who are said to have been employees of the company, had gone to repair a cooling fan, and were later found in a pit near to the cooling fan. The area remains sealed off and a joint investigation between the police and Health and Safety Executive has been launched.
