Subject:    Los Angeles Refinery Fire Spikes Gas Prices
Date of Email:    Fri 26/03/2004

Report Detail:

Wholesale gasoline prices in Los Angeles jumped as much as seven cents a gallon after three small fires shut the coker at Royal Dutch/Shell's 100,000 barrel per day refinery in Wilmington on Tuesday, traders said. The fire sent L.A. CARBOB blend gasoline up to $1.34/$1.35 per gallon, from $1.27/$1.28 per gallon on Monday, traders said. Shell spokeswoman said that the three small fires in the delayed coking unit had been extinguished by Tuesday afternoon and an investigation into their cause was underway.

The unit was not operating "at full capacity" and it was too early to tell how much production had been affected, the spokewoman said. It was also too early to tell when the unit would be fully working again, she said. Shell said that "all unaffected units continue to operate."
