Police in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region, had confirmed the death of one more person in
Friday afternoon's oil depot explosion, bringing the total number of people
killed to five, with one other seriously wounded.
The blast took place at 3:30 p.m. Friday when an oil depot at the No.
2 Hongyanchi Power Generation Co. Ltd. exploded. The explosion triggered
a big fire. The region was sealed off by police. After the fire was extinguished
at 6 p.m., police called off the curfew. The explosion did not effect
normal power supply in the city. According to a witness, about 1,000 tons
of oil were stored at the depot. Tankers unload oil at thed epot every
day.
Soon after the accident, leading officials of Urumqi and the regional
government rushed to the depot to organize rescue operation. Initial investigation
showed the explosion was caused by violation of safety rules. Further
investigation is underway.
