Date of Email reporting Incident:   Sun 07/12/2008

Report Detail:

This is to inform you that the London Fire brigade has had 3 recent fires involving Micromark convector heaters. In addition, further heaters have been taken as samples and 2 show signs of resistive heating due to loose fittings in the terminal connection block.
The model number is - mm53583- (heater with fan). The batch numbers are 291577/06/08.

The cause for both fires was determined by our Scientific Advisors as due to a loose or poorly fitting terminal block connection with some potential issue over the compatibility of the metal composition of the terminal ending in a brass crimped bullet going into the aluminium terminal block that causes local resistance heating.

The manufacturer is working with Haringey Trading Standards to prevent further sales of these fans until the issue can be resolved. However, there are a large number of these fans in circulation and the 4 images attached may help you to identify appliances at risk and the terminal connection block in question. These heaters have been involved in fires in a hospital, school and student halls to date.
