Subject:                     Tank Purging Operation - Gone Wrong...

Date of Email report:   Tue 12/10/2010

Report Detail:

Oil terminal in Libyan Sahara had a tank purging mishap ! Tank was taken out of service for refurbishment and during the purging operation to remove any lingering vapours they literally popped the tank lid. They were purging the tank using exhaust fumes from a large diesel engine nearby - if you look at pic 224 you can see the exhaust piped directly into the tank.  Seems like something hot caught the remaining vapour and it blew. Apparently this practice is common in Libya.
