Firefighters in Cushing fought a massive tank fire throughout the night. The fire started late Wednesday night. Firefighters believe a lightning strike started the fire. They spent more than ten and a half hours fighting the blaze. Crews are trained to handle tank fires. They used a foam to blanket the fire to get it under control. Edith Coen, who manages the tank farm, said there's almost 50,000 gallons of crude oil in the tank. The company said they lost about 1,000 barrels. The company who owns the tank farm is SemGroup. It transports crude oil, natural gas and other energy products. Last year the company faced serious financial problems. It just came out of bankruptcy in December. Firefighters put the fire out early Thursday morning.Deep Rock School, near the tank fire is open. People who live in the area do not need to evacuate. They are safe.

KOC tames tank fire

KOC Worker Inspecting Gathering Station

State-run Kuwait Oil Company (KOC) has brought a fire under control at one of its crude oil storage tanks at the al-Mugwa field, and there was no impact on production, a top official said today. "It is not out yet but it is under control," Reuters quoted deputy chairman of KOC Mohammed Hussain, as telling reporters in Abu Dhabi. The fire broke out in a dual tank at an oil and gas gathering centre, he said. The centre is known as GC-10. Opec-member Kuwait has 14 gathering centres and has bought another idled centre into operation to compensate for the impact of the fire, he said. Three centres were idle, so there was plenty of spare capacity, he said. The centres had been left idle due to Kuwait's adherence to Opec output cuts agreed in late 2008, he added. Kuwait, the world's fourth-largest oil exporter, pumped 2.28 million barrels per day in January, according to a Reuters survey. KOC runs domestic oil output and exploration.
