Subject:           UK Regulator Assesses Potential of Major Accident Hazards in CCS

Date of Email report:   Mon 25/07/2011

Report Detail:

The advent of carbon capture and storage (CCS) will result in CO2 being handled in quantities many orders of magnitude greater than it is today. This scale of operation has the potential to introduce a major accident hazard where currently one does not exist. The British Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published a technical paper setting out an initial assessment of the hazards resulting from loss of containment incidents from vessels containing large quantities of CO2 and discussing the subsequent major hazard potential associated with such events.
