More than 6,000 residents in the southern city of Guangzhou were evacuated after a chemical plant explosion released toxins into the air just days after a similar incident killed 14 people. The cause of the blast at the Futian Chemical Company in the southern Chinese city is unknown, with fire-fighters on the scene into Friday morning, according to state media reports. Local government officials ordered the area around the plant evacuated after a small amount of hydrogen chloride was detected in the air around the plant. Hydrogen chloride is a colourless to lightly yellow toxic gas with a strong, irritating smell.

An investigation into the explosion is underway. The incident comes just days after 14 people died because of a chemical plant explosion in the eastern Chinese city of Xintai.
