The fire brigade has successfully put out a fire in train wagons containing ethanol in the Netherlands' largest shunting yard in the town of Kijkhoek near Zwijndrecht. The fire broke out late on Friday evening and continued throughout the night. Fire fighters spent the whole night cooling train wagons to stop the fire spreading. Local residents had to be evacuated and a nearby motorway closed because there was a danger of explosion. Trains between Rotterdam and Dordrecht were replaced by busses. In the early hours of the morning, a number of train wagons carrying LPG gas were driven away from the area, removing the danger of explosion. As a result the motorway was reopened and residents have been allowed to return to their homes. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Additional Documentation: |
