An incident hasoccurredat the Repsol plant in Tarragonadue to the ignition of a release of ethylene

At 01:45 hours on the morning of Sunday November 10th  2013  there has been an explosion followed by fire at the Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE ) plant of Repsol Quimica as a result of loss of ethylene.   There have been no personal injury or any involvement in the rest of the facilities.

The company has activated its Self-Protection Plan  and site operations and emergency response teams have isolated the area and left remaining fuel to burn.   Company Fire-fighters have worked the incident protecting surrounding infrastructure and the fire burned itself out after one hour.  The Fire Brigade have also moved to the explosion site to conduct overhaul and inspection of the affected area along with government fire-fighters.  At approx. 02:50 hours the situation was  normalized and emergency was stood down. The Company has opened an internal investigation to determine the cause of the incident. 

Civil Protection Authorities triggered the public warning alert at 2:15 pm after receiving the first assessments from the fire-fighters and disabled this at  3:15 pm .  The explosion has not been a risk to the public and has not been necessary to establish containment.
