VISAKHAPATNAM: Five people are feared dead and 40 workers were seriously injured when a fire broke out on one of the cooling towers of the Hindustan Petrochemical Corporation Ltd (HPCL) refinery at Malkapuram in Vizag.  According to eyewitnesses, welding work was going on at the site as part of the expansion and nearly 70 workers were at the site when the accident took place.  While the body of one worker has been shifted to King George Hospital, the other injured were rushed to INS Kalyani naval hospital opposite the HPCL main gate for first aid and from there to various hospitals in the city.

Some more workers were feared to be trapped in the debris at the site, said sources at HPCL.   While 16 of those who sustained serious burns were admitted to New Care Hospital, while another six were admitted at Manipal Hospital, five at Seven Hills Hospital and three at Apollo. Nearly 10 workers with lesser burns were admitted at the INS Kalyani Naval Hospital.
