Subject:         CHINA - Driver Smashes Windscreen/shield As Tanker Engulfed Following RTA

Date of Email report:  Mon 30/06/2014 10:36

Report Detail:

A man was forced to kick through a windshield and run for his life, after the 30 ton gas tanker he was driving was struck by a crane and erupted into flames. The driver of a gas tanker has survived by the slimmest of margins when his truck erupted in flames after being knocked on its side by an out-of-control crane. Shocking footage from a security camera on a street in Huizhou, China, shows the tanker drive halfway through an intersection when it is smashed from the side by a crane that fails to stop in time. The tanker is knocked on its side and 30 tonnes of methanol begin spewing out onto the road, soon bursting into flames that engulf the entire vehicle. In the next few crucial seconds, one person is seen to leap away from the overturned truck, leaving behind the driver in the cabin on its side. As the flames continue to grow, the driver struggles in desperation to get through the windscreen. Finally, he manages to smash it out, and, apparently uninjured, runs frantically for safety. He escapes mere seconds before the cabin catches fire, flames rising high into the sky. Firefighters managed to extinguish the fire, which closed the street before the truck could be removed on Wednesday. The crash was reportedly caused by the crane driver speeding and being fatigued.
