Greg can be contacted at his e-mail address blow… Morning Kevin, I wonder if JOIFF can help with a small project we are currently running with. Hawkes Fire would like to ask the wider JOIFF community to help with an initiative to support the inauguration of a new Fire Service in East Africa. Somaliland is an unrecognised self-declared de facto sovereign state that is internationally recognised as an autonomous region of Somalia. The government of Somaliland regards itself as the successor state to the British Somaliland protectorate, which was granted independence on 26 June 1960 as the State of Somaliland, it does not consider itself part of Somalia. As a newly established and largely unrecognised independent Country the Government has limited funding but is striving to develop and modernise and eventually gain independent recognition. With no fire service, the people of Somaliland have to use whatever means possible to extinguish any fire, or just let their homes burn. Having recognised this issue, the government has secured enough money to buy several LPP units and ancillary equipment in order to establish the first ever fire service in the capital Hargeysa. The LPP’s will be mounted on water tankers, lockers built to stow equipment, training will then be provided and a new fire service established. The intention is then to develop further, with gradual expansion into the villages and towns, however this will take time and money. To help the people of Somaliland Hawkes Fire are asking the wider fire community for assistance. Do you have any unwanted fire equipment that you can donate to help develop the fire service. We are looking for fire kits, hand branches, hoses, dividing breaches etc. Anything fire related we will consider. If you are able to help, please send a list of what you have available and are available to send, we will collate a list and send through to Somaliland representatives to confirm before we send. We have a container leaving third week in February for the port of Berbera, it would be good for all concerned if we can fill the container with useful, potentially lifesaving, equipment.
