RUSSIA – Deadly Blast at Tatarstan Petrochemical Plant Triggers Investigation

A major explosion at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim petrochemical complex in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan killed three workers and injured dozens more on Tuesday. The facility, operated by the chemical company Sibur, is one of the country’s largest producers of synthetic rubber and plastics.

Impact on Workers and Surrounding Area
72 people were hurt in the incident, with injured employees receiving medical assistance immediately after the blast. The shock wave was strong enough to shatter windows in nearby homes, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk reported. Russian media also noted that some residents detected a chemical odor in the air following the explosion.

Cause of the Incident
Sibur said that the explosion and the fire that followed were most likely caused by an equipment failure. The company evacuated the facility after the blast to ensure worker safety.

Official Response
Authorities in Tatarstan have launched a preliminary investigation. Prosecutors stated that if safety violations are uncovered, criminal charges may be considered.
