SRI LANKA – Sapugaskanda Refinery Fire Contained Without Casualties

The Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that 11 fire engines were dispatched on September 10 to tackle a blaze at the Sapugaskanda oil refinery. The fire originated in an unused storage tank with a capacity of 40,000 metric tons.

According to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, the tank had not been operational for several years. Initial investigations suggest that sparks during maintenance work may have triggered the incident.

Deputy Labour Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe assured the public that the fire did not disrupt the country’s fuel supply or distribution network.

No injuries or casualties were reported.
