Suspected Gas Leak at ENEOS Refinery in Osaka Leaves One Dead
A possible gas leak at the ENEOS oil refinery in Sakai, Osaka Prefecture, led to the hospitalization of three workers on Saturday, one of whom was later confirmed dead.
The incident occurred around 10 a.m., when the Sakai fire department received an emergency call reporting that multiple workers had collapsed at the refinery. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene.
According to preliminary reports from fire and police officials, the suspected leak happened during maintenance work when a pipe was being removed. The gas leak was believed to have been contained by approximately 10:35 a.m.
ENEOS Corp. suspects the workers may have inhaled hydrogen sulfide, a toxic gas, though further investigation is ongoing.
The refinery, located in the Sakai-Semboku Coastal Industrial Zone, is part of one of Japan’s major industrial areas.
