Tragic Underground Accident Claims Lives of Five Miners at Tarkwa Community Mine
Five dedicated employees of the Tarkwa Community Mine in Akoon, located within the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality of the Western Region, have tragically lost their lives. The incident unfolded as they were diligently working in an underground area within the mine.
The underground space they were operating in suddenly collapsed, resulting in the immediate loss of these five lives. Additionally, four others were injured during this unfortunate accident.
The bodies of the deceased were initially taken to the Apinto Government Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations and preservation. Subsequently, they were released to their respective families for burial arrangements.
Out of the four individuals who sustained varying degrees of injuries and were undergoing treatment at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital, two have been discharged, while the others continue to receive medical care.
The Media and Public Relations Manager, Mr. Kwadwo Safo, shared these details with the Ghana News Agency (GNA). According to his statement, the incident took place on Wednesday, September 13, at approximately 12:48 PM.
Additional information obtained by the GNA revealed that on that ill-fated day, the employees, originating from the Western and Upper East regions, were accompanied by four colleagues. Together, they ventured into the mine’s sixth level, known as “Abease,” for their work.
During their mining activities, they observed a substantial gold-containing pillar within the area and decided to mine around it. Unfortunately, this action led to a collapse of the pillar, causing the tragic loss of five lives and injuring four others.
Upon notification, the local Tarkwa police promptly intervened, aiding in the recovery of the deceased’s bodies and the transportation of the injured to receive essential medical attention.
