USA – Chemical Release Prompts Three-Mile Evacuation Near Ohio Facility
Incident Overview:
On the morning of June 11, a chemical reaction at Austin Powder’s Red Diamond Plant led to the controlled release of gas via the facility’s built-in safety systems. The company confirmed that nitric acid, the chemical involved, remained fully contained within its tank, with no leaks or external contamination.
Emergency Response and Public Safety Measures:
Upon detection of the gas, emergency protocols were immediately activated. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and local emergency responders were notified. Authorities ordered the evacuation of a three-mile radius around the plant, which included residents of the nearby town of Zaleski. In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily restricted air traffic within a 30-nautical-mile zone around the area.
Environmental and Health Impact:
Local fire departments and hazardous materials teams conducted air monitoring and found nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) levels at the facility’s boundaries to be well below hazardous limits. Field screenings in surrounding communities detected no presence of NOₓ. Surface water tests by the Ohio EPA showed normal pH levels, and private water wells were confirmed to be safe.
Investigation and Oversight:
The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) has opened an investigation and sent a representative to the site to begin a fact-finding mission. The agency reported that a large, brown-colored plume of gas spread over the plant and neighboring areas during the release.
Company Response and Ongoing Efforts:
Austin Powder has begun an internal investigation and pledged to implement safety improvements as needed. On June 17, the company resumed limited operations at the Red Diamond Plant following full containment and safety verification. A phased restart is now in progress. President and CEO John Rathbun issued a public apology and commended staff and emergency personnel for their swift response. “We remain committed to transparency, safety, and earning the trust of our community,” he stated.
