USA – Explosion at East Providence industrial site hospitalizes several people
Several people were hospitalized following an explosion at an industrial facility in East Providence on Wednesday the 8th evening. Authorities treated the incident as a mass casualty event, prompting a large emergency response and coordination with nearby hospitals.
According to city officials, 13 individuals were transported to medical facilities, while Aspen Aerogels reported that 11 of its employees were taken for treatment. All of those affected had been released by Thursday afternoon.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the Aspen Aerogels plant on Dexter Road at approximately 8:14 p.m. after reports of an explosion and fire inside the building. Traffic in the surrounding area was diverted as responders worked to secure the scene.
The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Aspen Aerogels said the situation is now under control and confirmed that it has begun its own internal inquiry, with updates to be provided as they become available.
The company manufactures advanced insulation materials used to improve safety and energy efficiency in buildings, industrial settings, and electric vehicle batteries.
In recent months, Aspen Aerogels has faced financial pressure due to declining demand, which it attributes to regulatory changes and reduced incentives for sustainable technologies.
