USA – Four Injured in Incident at BP Cherry Point Refinery
Four workers were injured on Saturday the 18th morning following an incident at the BP Cherry Point Refinery in Blaine, Washington. Emergency crews responded quickly and brought the situation under control.
Incident and Immediate Response
Witnesses at the refinery and in nearby Birch Bay reported hearing what sounded like an explosion around 10:20 a.m. Shortly afterward, BP evacuated employees from the facility as a precautionary measure.
Officials confirmed that four workers were injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. All other personnel were safely accounted for following the evacuation.
The incident was fully contained on Saturday and authorities stated it posed no risk to surrounding communities.
Injuries and Recovery
By Monday, BP confirmed that all injured workers had been discharged from the hospital. No further details about the nature of their injuries were released.
Investigations Underway
Multiple agencies are now investigating the incident, including the Northwest Clean Air Agency and the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries.
Labor and Industries announced Tuesday that it has launched an inspection involving BP and contractors Spectrum and Intertek. The process may take up to six months, with findings to be made public upon completion.
The Northwest Clean Air Agency is also working with BP to determine the cause of the incident, according to spokesperson Seth Preston. In addition, BP is conducting its own internal investigation.
Environmental Assessment
The Washington State Department of Ecology described the incident as a “release to air,” noting that there was no impact on water systems. As of Monday, the agency did not expect to take further action.
Operational Impact and Cause
BP has not disclosed what type of accident occurred or what may have caused it. A company spokesperson also declined to comment on how refinery operations may have been affected, noting that BP does not typically discuss day-to-day operations.
Investigators say it may take several days before BP’s internal review provides clearer answers regarding the cause of the incident.
