SPAIN – Chemical Plant Fire in Zuera Triggers Emergency Response
A major fire broke out at the Unión Deriván chemical plant in Zuera, Spain, on the morning of July 28, 2025. The incident led to the release of a toxic cloud, prompting immediate emergency measures.
Incident Overview
The fire began during the early hours at Unión Deriván, a facility that produces oleochemical products. In response, local authorities activated the municipal emergency plan. As a precaution, more than 8,700 residents in Zuera and over 3,000 in nearby San Mateo de Gállego were instructed to remain indoors between 9:00 and 10:30 AM due to concerns about air quality.
Emergency Response
Firefighters from both the Provincial Fire Department of Zaragoza and the Zaragoza City Fire Department were quickly dispatched. They utilized various specialized equipment, including foam units, heavy urban pumps, and articulated arms, to control the flames. By midday, the fire was brought under control, and residential confinement orders were lifted, though restrictions continued in the industrial area.
Safety Measures and Impact
Authorities temporarily closed a section of the A-124 road, affecting access to the El Campillo industrial estate. Residents were urged to stay indoors, keep windows and doors shut, and disable any ventilation systems to reduce exposure to airborne contaminants. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Unión Deriván, also known as UNDESA, is a prominent manufacturer of fatty acids, esters, and PVC stabilizers. Due to the nature of the materials handled at the facility, strict safety protocols are in place to manage hazardous substances.
