NORWAY – Worker Dies in Accident at Equinor’s Mongstad Refinery

A contractor lost his life in a lifting-related accident at Equinor’s Mongstad refinery on 17 September. The incident occurred at 13:40 local time, and although the worker received immediate medical attention at the scene, his life could not be saved, the company reported.

The deceased was employed by Crane Norway, a supplier providing crane and lifting services at the refinery, which is Norway’s largest.

Equinor CEO Anders Opedal expressed his condolences, stating:
“This tragic incident, where someone has died while working for Equinor, deeply affects us all. My heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends, and colleagues who have lost someone dear to them. Together with our supplier companies, we will provide support to those impacted.”

In response, Equinor has halted all non-critical activities at Mongstad and secured the affected area. Approximately 1,500 employees gathered for an information meeting on the afternoon of the accident, with additional sessions held the following day. The company also plans discussions with supplier leadership to address the situation.

Authorities have been informed, and the police have opened an investigation. Equinor has launched its own inquiry into the cause of the accident.
