UK – Major Incident Declared After Industrial Fire Sends Thick Smoke Across Town
A major incident declared following a fire at the Impala terminal in Milford Haven on Monday evening has been stood down after firefighters brought the blaze under control.
Emergency services confirmed that everyone on site was safely accounted for, with one person suffering minor injuries and receiving treatment at the scene. The Welsh Ambulance Service attended but no casualties required hospital treatment.
Residents living near the terminal were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as thick black smoke drifted across the area, while motorists were urged to avoid the scene to allow emergency vehicles access. Temporary road closures around the site have since been lifted.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called to Impala Terminals Infrastructure UK Ltd at Robeston West at 5.11pm on Monday, 6 July. Fire crews from Milford Haven, Haverfordwest and Pembroke Dock responded after reports of a significant fire, with smoke visible from miles away.
Firefighters said the incident involved a decommissioned oil storage tank containing residual crude oil, together with around 60 gas cylinders, including propane and oxygen cylinders. Although the scale of the incident prompted the declaration of a major incident, that status was later rescinded once crews had contained the fire.
By Tuesday morning, the fire service confirmed the blaze had been extinguished and said there was no evidence of any wider risk to the public. Crews left the scene late on Monday after making the site safe.
In a statement, Impala Terminals confirmed an incident had occurred at its Milford Haven facility at around 5.10pm. The company said its emergency response team was working alongside the emergency services and confirmed that all employees and contractors had been accounted for.
The operator added that its priority remained the safety of its workforce, the surrounding community and the environment, saying it would provide further information when appropriate.
The terminal, formerly operated by Puma Energy, is located on the site of a former oil refinery and serves as a storage and distribution hub for petroleum and hydrocarbon products.
Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said further updates will be issued as more information becomes available.
