NIGERIA – Investigation under way after diesel tank fire at Lagos fuel terminal
An investigation has been launched after a fire involving a diesel storage tank at the Bono Energy Terminal in Lagos, Nigeria, was successfully contained without causing casualties or spreading to nearby petroleum facilities.
The incident occurred on 3 July 2026 at the terminal, located within the Ibru Jetty Complex in the Olodi Apapa area, one of the country’s busiest petroleum storage and distribution hubs.
According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the blaze involved a five-million-litre Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) storage tank. Fire crews from three stations, supported by emergency response teams from neighbouring oil and gas facilities, prevented the fire from reaching adjacent storage tanks and other critical infrastructure before extinguishing it.
Authorities confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were reported. In the aftermath of the incident, the Lagos State Government announced that an investigation had been initiated to establish the cause of the fire and examine the circumstances surrounding the event. No preliminary findings have yet been released.
The Bono Energy Terminal forms part of the petroleum storage infrastructure serving the Apapa industrial district, a key gateway for fuel imports and distribution in Nigeria. The incident underscores the importance of effective fire protection systems, emergency preparedness and coordinated response measures at bulk liquid storage facilities handling large volumes of flammable products.
