BRAZIL – Authorities urge public to avoid Manaus Industrial District after styrene leak

Residents and workers have been advised to stay away from Manaus’ Industrial District following a styrene leak that prompted an emergency response on Wednesday evening, July 15.

According to the Civil Defense of Amazonas, the incident occurred at approximately 5:36 p.m. in Industrial District I, located within the Manaus Free Trade Zone (ZFM). Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and authorities implemented precautionary measures to protect people in the affected area.

Officials are urging anyone near the leak to leave the vicinity immediately and relocate to a safe location. The public is also being asked to avoid traveling through Industrial District I and nearby areas until authorities confirm that conditions are safe.

Exposure to styrene may pose health risks. Anyone experiencing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, breathing difficulties, or irritation of the eyes or skin should seek medical care without delay at the nearest healthcare facility.

The Civil Defense of Amazonas said it continues to monitor the situation alongside the appropriate emergency and environmental agencies and will provide additional updates as they become available.
