TAIWAN – Explosion at Taiwan Waste Facility Injures 15

An overnight fire at a waste-storage facility in Tainan, Taiwan, resulted in an explosion on 22 August 2026, leaving 15 people injured.

The Tainan City Fire Bureau was alerted to the incident at around 1:12am and responded with 144 firefighters and 53 emergency vehicles. The fire broke out at a site on Haidian Road in Annan District.

While crews were working to contain the blaze, an explosion occurred. Firefighters eventually brought the fire under control after more than four hours of operations.

Three firefighters and 12 members of the public sustained injuries. Most of the injuries were reported to be minor, and all 15 people were later released from hospital following medical treatment.

An initial examination of the site found aluminium-magnesium alloy and waste oil among the stored materials. Investigators are now examining where the waste originated and how it came to be stored at the facility.

Prosecutors have linked Youcheng International Trading Co., Ltd. to the waste-storage operation. However, the precise cause of the explosion and the events leading up to it have not yet been established.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident.
