GREECE – Second Worker Dies Following Explosion at Greek Refinery
A second worker has died following an explosion at Motor Oil’s refinery near Athens on Friday, according to Greece’s ANA news agency. The worker died in hospital on Sunday after sustaining critical head injuries in the incident.
The latest fatality follows the death of another employee, which the company confirmed on the day of the accident. Local media reported that an explosion occurred at the refinery during the incident.
Motor Oil stated that the accident took place while preventive maintenance work was being carried out. The company has confirmed that it is cooperating fully with the official investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The refinery, which belongs to the Vardinogiannis group, has experienced several serious incidents over the years. A fire in 2024 left four people injured, while an explosion in a medical room in 2020 resulted in one death and three injuries. Earlier, in 2002, three maintenance workers died after inhaling toxic fumes inside a fuel tank.
The latest incident brings renewed attention to the refinery’s safety record as investigators work to establish the cause of the explosion and determine the circumstances that led to the two fatalities.
