INDIA – Baloda Bazar Steel Plant Explosion Leaves 7 Dead, Several Injured in Chhattisgarh
A major industrial accident at a private steel plant in Chhattisgarh’s Baloda Bazar district has resulted in the deaths of at least seven workers, with several others suffering serious burn injuries.
The explosion occurred early Thursday morning at the Real Ispat & Power Ltd facility in Bakulahi village, under the jurisdiction of the Bhatapara Rural police station.
What Happened at the Plant
Officials said the blast erupted inside a coal furnace while workers were carrying out routine cleaning and maintenance work nearby. Without warning, the furnace exploded, sending flames, burning coal, and debris across the area.
The intensity of the explosion caused severe burns to workers stationed close to the furnace. Thick smoke and fire were seen rising from the plant, triggering panic among employees and nearby residents.
Rescue and Emergency Response
Emergency services, including fire brigades, ambulances, and police teams, rushed to the site soon after the incident was reported. Firefighters worked to contain the blaze, while rescue teams evacuated injured workers from the affected section of the plant.
Police cordoned off the area to allow rescue operations to proceed smoothly. Local residents, who reported hearing a loud blast and seeing flames, also attempted to assist before emergency teams arrived.
Death Toll and Injuries
Authorities confirmed that seven workers died on the spot after being exposed to extreme heat and flames. Several others sustained critical burn injuries and were taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment.
Officials said the number of injured is still being assessed, with many victims reported to be in serious condition due to extensive burns and smoke inhalation.
Investigation Into the Blast
Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion. Initial inquiries will focus on whether safety procedures were followed and if the incident was triggered by a technical failure or human negligence.
Investigators are examining furnace equipment, maintenance records, and internal safety protocols in coordination with the plant’s management.
