KAZAKHSTAN – Four Dead Following Explosion at Kazakh Grain Facility

A tragic explosion at a flour production facility in Kazakhstan’s Almaty region has resulted in the deaths of four employees. The incident occurred on May 23 at a site operated by Asia AgroFood JSC, which includes both a grain depot and flour mill.

The explosion originated on the ground floor of a nine-storey building, reportedly caused by the ignition of a dust-air mixture. The blast led to a significant fire that prompted the deployment of over 100 firefighters and 31 specialized emergency units. The teams were able to contain the blaze before it spread further.

All four workers sustained critical injuries, including severe burns. According to the regional healthcare department, one of the victims had burns covering more than 70% of their body. Despite medical efforts, officials confirmed on May 24 that all four had died from their injuries.

Asia AgroFood JSC described the explosion as a “heavy blow” to the company and announced that the families of the deceased would receive financial compensation.

The company, which processes around 400 tonnes of grain daily, distributes its flour across Kazakhstan and exports to neighboring countries including Russia, China, Uzbekistan, and others in Central Asia.
