IRAN – Gas Leak at Iranian Refinery Claims Two Lives, Injures Nine

A gas leak at the Shiraz Refinery in Iran’s Fars Province claimed the lives of two workers and injured nine others on Saturday 31st May, according to reports from state media citing local officials.

The incident prompted a swift emergency response. “Nine of the injured were promptly transferred to hospitals in Shiraz and Zarqan with the help of emergency teams,” said Hojjatollah Rezaei, deputy governor of Fars for political and security affairs. He confirmed that all nine injured workers are currently in stable condition.

Rezaei added that the two fatalities resulted from severe inhalation of toxic gases, which led to suffocation.

Despite the tragedy, refinery operations have not been disrupted. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the gas leak.

The Shiraz Refinery, also known as SORC, is situated along the Shiraz-Isfahan highway. It processes approximately 40,000 barrels of crude oil per day—equivalent to around 2 million tons annually. The facility receives its crude supply through a 230-kilometer pipeline originating from the Gachsaran oil fields.
