LIBYA – Huge Fire Erupts at Libya’s Zawiya Refinery

A major fire broke out at Libya’s Zawiya refinery, prompting authorities to declare a maximum emergency in the area and raising concerns about the future of operations at one of the country’s most important oil facilities.

The blaze began on Monday evening at storage tank 402-T, which is operated by the Brega Oil Company, according to the NOC. The tank was reportedly holding about 4.5 million litres (1.2 million gallons) of gasoline when it was targeted.

Footage verified by Al Jazeera showed large flames and thick black smoke rising above the facility. The Zawiya refinery, located around 40km (25 miles) west of Tripoli, is Libya’s largest operating refinery, with a processing capacity of approximately 120,000 barrels per day.

Libya’s Ambulance and Emergency Service said there were no serious injuries. Most people who required medical attention were treated for smoke inhalation.

Hours after the main fire, the NOC said the refinery was still facing sabotage attempts.

Authorities have called for an investigation and urged that those responsible be brought to justice. The NOC said the continued attacks could threaten the refinery’s ability to operate.
