UK Oil Storage Reg's 2005

Initial Email Enquiry –

To the JOIFF Secretary,
Can you ask the membership the following question:
"With the Oil Storage Regulations 2005 coming into force soon in the UK . How are they planning to, or maybe already do, comply with regard to fuel storage for diesel driven fire water pumps."

1st Response –

At Carrington we conducted a site wide audit of all our primary and secondary containment systems early last year. Included in that was the 4500 litre Gas oil storage tank for the diesel driven fire pumps. These pumps are sited in an offsite location next to the River Mersey. The tank is positioned outside the fire pumphouse and was bunded by an engineering brick containment wall. Tests were carried out on the integrity of the wall, results from which proved the bund to be totally inadequate. Work was undertaken to construct a new impervious bund made of reinforced concrete in line with the new regulations. This was completed in September 2003 just in time to comply with the "existing oil storage at significant risk" compliance date. A small concrete bund was also constructed to cover any spillages from the filling point which is remote from the tank.

The Environment Agency have produced a useful document - PPG2.
