SYRIA – Fire Contained at Oil Refinery in Syria’s Al-Hasakah Province
Firefighters extinguished a blaze at an oil refinery in Syria’s northeastern Al-Hasakah province on Wednesday, October 21, with no casualties reported, according to local media reports.
The fire broke out inside an electric furnace at the facility in the Al-Jabsa oil fields, east of Al-Shaddadi in southern Al-Hasakah. Emergency crews from the oil fields and gas facilities, working alongside provincial emergency and disaster management teams, brought the blaze under control before it could spread to other parts of the site.
Initial information from the provincial emergency and disaster management directorate indicated that a leak of flammable material following a power outage may have triggered the incident. The cause has not been independently confirmed.
The refinery had previously sustained damage and has been undergoing partial rehabilitation ahead of a planned return to service. The extent of any additional damage caused by Wednesday’s fire, and whether it will affect the facility’s reopening timeline, remain unclear.
The incident comes days after an explosion caused a fire on a gas export pipeline in the Arabidi area of Al-Hasakah province on October 15. Repair work subsequently began on the pipeline. However, no verified information has established a connection between the pipeline incident and the refinery fire.
Further details about the refinery fire, including the final determination of its cause and any impact on operations, have not yet been confirmed.
