USA – Hazmat Release Forces Evacuations in North Toledo

A hazardous materials release at an industrial facility in North Toledo triggered evacuations and overnight shelter-in-place orders for residents, Toledo Fire & Rescue and city officials confirmed.

The incident began around 10:48 p.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at Sterling Pipe & Tube, located at 1050 Progress Ave. Toledo Fire & Rescue Pvt. Sheldon Collins told local media that a tank was found leaking on the ground outside the building, releasing a chemical vapor into the air. The substance had not been officially identified as of the latest city update, though some local reports, citing fire radio traffic, named the chemical as methyl acrylate — a detail city officials have not confirmed.

Contrary to early hazard warnings describing a possible explosion risk, the City of Toledo’s official notice stated plainly that no explosion occurred; the incident was a release only, and no injuries or deaths have been reported.

Toledo Fire & Rescue and the Lucas County Emergency Management Agency ordered an evacuation covering a one-mile radius around the site. The Sterling Pipe & Tube facility itself was evacuated, along with the Raintree Village mobile home park and the Alexis Addition neighborhood; Washington Township officials assisted with evacuating Raintree Village residents. Some outlets reported differing figures for the affected zone, including a half-mile evacuation radius and a three-mile shelter-in-place area, reflecting the fluid nature of the response as crews worked through the night.

Residents outside the mandatory evacuation zone were told to shelter in place — remaining indoors, closing windows and doors, and shutting off any ventilation systems that draw in outside air.

Emergency responders moved quickly to establish safe transportation and shelter options. Shoreland Elementary School was opened as a temporary shelter, while the American Red Cross and Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA) staged buses at a Meijer parking lot on East Alexis to transport displaced residents. Several roads were closed as a precaution, including Enterprise Boulevard between Stickney Avenue and Benore Road, and nearby rail lines were also shut down while the situation was assessed.

As of the most recent update, issued around 1:45 a.m. Wednesday, the release was still active, with fire crews continuing to monitor the site overnight. Officials said no changes to the evacuation or shelter-in-place orders would take effect without direct public notification, and cautioned residents to judge their risk based on their location relative to the designated zone rather than visible haze in the air. The cause of the leak remains under investigation.
