USA – Contractors Injured in Explosion at Baltimore Wastewater Treatment Plant
Three contractors were injured following an explosion at the Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant in Baltimore, Maryland, prompting an ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident.
The explosion occurred on June 9 at the South Baltimore facility. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, and the injured workers were transported to hospital for treatment. Reports indicate that two of the contractors sustained critical or serious injuries, while a third was later released. No fatalities were reported.
Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) officials said preliminary findings point to a possible electrical fault or arc flash. The injured contractors were working on an electrical upgrade project intended to expand the plant’s power capacity at the time of the incident.
As a precaution, operations in the affected area were temporarily halted while safety inspections were conducted. The explosion also resulted in a temporary power outage, forcing the facility to rely on backup systems to maintain essential wastewater treatment functions. Plant operations have since returned to normal.
The investigation is being conducted by the DPW in coordination with the Baltimore City Fire Department, utility provider BGE and other agencies. Work on the electrical improvement project has been suspended while authorities determine the exact cause of the explosion.
