MALTA – Blast at Maltese Fireworks Factory Injures Three and Damages Nearby Properties

Three people were injured after a powerful explosion ripped through the Lourdes Fireworks Factory in Salina, Malta, early on Monday morning.

The blast occurred at approximately 6:30am and sparked a series of fireworks explosions that continued for several hours. Authorities said two farmers and a food courier were caught in the vicinity of the factory and were taken to hospital with injuries. Four cows were also killed in the incident.

The force of the explosion caused widespread damage in the surrounding area. Residents fled their homes as debris, rocks and damaged electrical cables fell nearby. A hotel close to the factory also sustained damage, with windows shattered by the blast. Debris scattered across local roads, while falling glass reportedly injured some guests.

Emergency crews from the Armed Forces of Malta and the Civil Protection Department quickly responded to the scene. Drones were deployed to assess the extent of the damage, while officers secured the area and began searching for unexploded fireworks.

Animal welfare officials and volunteers from the MaYa Foundation assisted local farms and shelters affected by the explosion. The foundation reported significant damage to agricultural properties and called for support to help those impacted.

Due to the ongoing danger posed by unexploded pyrotechnics, Civil Protection officers are expected to continue operations in the area into Tuesday. Authorities are monitoring conditions carefully, particularly as higher daytime temperatures could increase the risk of further detonations.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion, which remains unknown.
